"He leads me in... righteousness... though I walk through... the shadow of death"

Man has failed in his attempts to become immortal or control death. Some seek to use death as a statement of their power, but extinguishing life is not conquering death. The ability to chop down a tree, is nowhere equal to growing one. No terrorist bomb, no national war, no genocide, and no aborted baby has ever advanced anyone's life.

To parlay with death by diminishing, ignoring, or explaining it away, cannot erase the desire to live within the human soul. Men tinker with the building blocks of life, but they cannot erase their mortality. Our sin and rebellion against our Creator has killed us all.

The best human approach to death is to die unselfishly. Some heroically offer their lives incrementally or completely to serve the best interests of many lives. Even then, death is not swallowed up in life. Only Christ can overcome death.

God's path in Christ brings us into the very shadow of death itself. That shadow is in the shape of a cross with the silhouette of the broken Son of God nailed to it. As the shadow of the Cross falls upon us, we are convinced of our sin, the disconnection of our own life, as well as our inability to reconnect to the living God

.

And so we must walk with the Shepherd to make it through. We must listen to Him. Jesus said: "He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life" (John 5:25-26 NKJV)

Scriptural Context

Psalms 23:1-6 NKJV A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (2) He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. (3) He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness, For His name's sake. (4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. (6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
