He leads me in the paths of righteousness, For His name's sake.

There are around 30 or so references to the Lord doing things for His name's sake throughout the Bible. Whenever the Lord moves on behalf of His own name it is to reinforce that He is a good God with love for His people.

God will not do things for the sake of our name. Our names all represent the failure of mankind to love God and each other. We have not earned anything from God. His love is a choice made twice by the Almighty. Christ created us by His word and purchased us by His blood, so He protects us by His name!

The sole duty of man is glorify God. The greatest way God may be glorified in us to receive Him as the Shepherd of our days. For the sake of His name, for the credit due Him alone, we receive His blessing and share His grace.

You and I have no righteousness to protect, so He leads us in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Let us then be made whole in Christ, that others may see His holiness. May we imitate His ways, that others may find the way. May we love each other as Christ has loved us, that the world may know He is true... all for the sake of His name.

Scriptural Context

Psalms 23:1-6 NKJV A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (2) He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. (3) He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness, For His name's sake. (4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. (6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
