"He leads me beside the still waters."

In the spring of 1982, before a Wednesday evening church gathering in Jacksonville, FL, a young follower of Jesus stood outside the back of the building where he had been baptized some months earlier. At the edge of the small pond, the twenty year old pondered the setting sun on the face of the water.

The horizon was ablaze with a ribbon of bright orange shifting to a rich red, and blending onto a velvety dark blue sky. On the other opposite bank, one tree stood blackly silhouetted as the first bright star of the evening looked down from a low spot to the southwest. With not even the whisper of a breeze, the waters were smooth as glass that night.

The Lord told him to toss a small rock into the pond. The ripples blurred and disrupted the surface. The Holy Spirit said, "Your heart is like that water. When at peace and free from anxiety, your heart reflects the glory of the Lord as the water reflects the skys above you". Then the Scripture came to mind "Let not your heart be troubled".

A troubled heart can't accurately mirror the face of Christ to us. As actual sheep don't like drinking from tumultuous waters, the Lord's disciples, are not refreshed in turmoil either. But through communion with Christ, He leads us where we can be still and know that He is God.

As surely as the Lord is our Shepherd, He will sustain us. Christ Jesus is the living water that refreshes the inner man. If we will follow, Jesus carries us to the place where we can see Him for Who He is, that we may be revived in His presence.

Scriptural Context

Psalms 23:1-6 NKJV A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (2) He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. (3) He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. (4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. (6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
